Sep. 7th, 2006 07:13 pmJust been to a talk by John Gummer ex Conservative Minister, close ally of Thatcher in the 80's.
It turns out he's a hard-core greenie, fanatical on the issue of climate change and had pretty much the same opinion of George Bush as everybody else in the audience.
Whod've guessed? Although I could've if I'd read the wiki first.
He was refreshingly optimistic about the issue, he had a "this is incredably serious but we can solve it" message. His sub-message was, of course, was "voting Conservative will help solve it" although that was at least only mentioned in passing, he didn't dwell on it and soon got on to other things.
That was nicely different from the last environmental talk I went to. It was delivered by a real beard and sandles type who basically said "collapse of civilization and technology is on it's way, prepare to get used to a medieval lifestyle". This actually implies the extinction of three quarters of humanity as medieval technology couldn't support the current population, but he didn't say that as I think he was secretly looking forward to it. Several other points he made were FOS, but I didn't querry him on them as they only occurred to me later... damnit!
